Shirt patterns have a long history around the globe, adapting various local cotton threads, weaving techniques, and dying technologies. Traditional Madras, originating in the city now known as Chennai, is made from a short fiber cotton that, due to processing, results in a fabric with lots of slub. The threads, then hand woven into yarn and hand dyed in dazzling colors, are combined into complex harmonious patterns. The resulting fabrics are used in a variety of clothing, creating eye catching and unique designs.
