Akira Kurosawa's 1975 film Dersu Uzala tells the life story of a Nanai hunter, for whom the film is named. Dersu Uzala lived in modern day Russia in the late 19th century, and guided Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev in his mission to map the Taiga river. Kurosawa's adaptation of Arsenyev's book about Dersu won numerous film prizes, including the Academy Award for best foreign picture.
