vowels for WAKA WAKA at Salone del Mobile

In partnership with Italian architecture and design publication, Capsule, we were proud to exhibit at this year’s Capsule Plaza during Salone del Mobile, the internationally recognized furniture and design fair established in 1961. We presented our first ever collaborative product, a chair and stool designed together with Shin Okuda, founder of Los Angeles based studio, WAKA WAKA.

Our collaborative chair is constructed from Baltic birch plywood, accented with steel bolts. With a rectangular seat and angled back rest, the work continues the raw materiality of WAKA WAKA’s signature pieces. The paired stool, fabricated from the same plywood, mimics the shape of the chair’s dowels, creating a conversation between the two pieces.

Born out of a shared conversation with Okuda, the International Klein Blue set of WAKA WAKA’s Standard Chair and Stool designs appeared in context of our indigo dyed denim, exploring the uses of raw blue color as a design feature.

Also included in our exhibition were WAKA WAKA pieces in a custom International Klein Blue colorway, selections from our Research Library, a range of our made in Japan denim, and a sound system designed and built by Matéo Garcia. Throughout the fair, we hosted conversations with our Creative Director Yuki Yagi and Shin Okuda, Michael Abel and Nile Greenberg of ANY,  Ellena Ehrl and Tibor Bielicky of EHRL BIELICKY, as well as DJ sets utilizing Matéo Garcia's sound system.
