The Meissen Demitasse Cup
Emily Ma
Why do we find the most fragile things beautiful? What emotions can be captured in a brittle object like a teacup, one misstep away from shattering?
The Meissen Demitasse Cup and Saucer, circa 1870, is a fine example of German porcelain craftsmanship. This set is notable for its deep rose ground color. It features a cartouche on the front of the cup with beautifully hand-painted flowers, demonstrating precise detail and vivid colors. The flowers are framed in elegant hand gilding, and the rims and handle of the cup are also trimmed with gold. Within a lapis lazuli hued base reminiscent of deep underwater, a lonely girl in tears is depicted in white enamel.
